The Maryville College football team delivered one for the ages last week, outlasting USA South Athletic Conference foe Methodist University, 36-30, in four overtimes last Saturday at Honaker Field. The Scots (2-2, 1-0) visit Shenandoah University (1-3, 0-1) for another league rumble on Saturday. Kickoff in Winchester, Va., is 4 p.m.

Maryville got a game-winning, 12-yard touchdown run from junior Darrell Tate in holding off the Monarchs last week. The Scots also got a pair of touchdown catches of 42 and 19 yards from sophomore Wesley Idlette, along with three Andrew Noboa field goals of 37, 36 and 25 yards. Two of Noboa’s kicks came during bonus football. Backup quarterback Chris Shelton had a 1-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Turner in the first overtime. Maryville linebacker Kyle Chewning, the 2008 USA South Defensive Player of the Year, earned USA South Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts against Methodist, finishing with 15 total tackles, two of them sacks. Chewning accounted for seven solo stops, with three of his tackles accounting for 15 yards of lost Monarch offense.
Other Maryville sports in action this weekend
Women’s soccer (6-2-1) will host the University of the South on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Men’s soccer (7-1-3) will tangle with tangle with the Tigers on Saturday at 4. The Lady Scots are back at it on Saturday at 1 when Salem comes calling, concluding the weekend on the home pitch against Spelman on Sunday at 2.
Women’s volleyball has full slate scheduled for the weekend, opening with Huntingdon College at Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Friday at 6 p.m. The Lady Scots (16-5) will double dip on Saturday, with LaGrange (Ga.) visiting at 3. Salem finishes the weekend at 5.
The Maryville men’s golf team, in its first season of varsity play, will host the Green Meadow Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Green Meadow Country Club.
