Their successes on the playing fields and courts of Maryville College span 50 years and involve at least seven sports. Wearing the orange and garnet, they enjoyed bowl games, national rankings and regional tournaments. Between them are numerous athletic letters and MVP awards.
Six men and one woman - Walter “Les” Rock, Alan Rock, Ken Adair, Randy Schaurer, Denise Penzkofer, Ben Sohrabi, and Kelvin Richardson - were inducted into the Maryville College Wall of Fame during a brunch ceremony Oct. 16 in the Alumni Gym on the Maryville College campus.
Established in the mid-1970s, the Maryville College Wall of Fame award recognizes outstanding individuals who have contributed to Maryville College athletics. Recognition is in two categories: “Regular membership” is reserved for those student-athletes who competed for Maryville College, displaying excellence in athletic competition. Nominees for regular membership must be graduates of the College. “Special membership” is granted to those people who have been of outstanding value to the Maryville College Athletic Program.
Athletes who earned the award this year competed in a variety of sports from football to soccer and volleyball, and had sports careers ranging as far back as the early 1940s. More than half went on to careers as educators and coaches, and several played professionally or semi-professionally in their sports.
