Class 3A playoffs
Christian Academy of Knoxville (10-1) at Alcoa (11-0)
The Warriors put quite a scare into the top-ranked Tornadoes in the District 4AA championship game two weeks ago, Christian Academy striking for an early touchdown on the game’s opening possession. Alcoa powered up behind the running of Mr. Football back of the year finalist Jaron Toney to extract a 24-7 win, with Mr. Football lineman of the year finalist Tyler Robinson adding a touchdown catch from his tight end spot. Junior defensive end Darrell Warren is one of the season’s unsung heroes for the Tornadoes, his harassment of Warrior quarterback Quinn Epperly in the previous meeting contributing greatly to the Alcoa victory.
Class 6A playoffs
McMinn County (9-2) at Maryville (10-1)
The top-ranked Rebels really cut loose on the Cherokees the last time, routing McMinn County, 49-6, in a Week 3 meeting. The Cherokees have one of the state’s most talked about quarterbacks in senior Cy Ables. The 6-foot-4, 200 pounder has directed the Cherokees to eight consecutive wins since the Maryville loss. Defending the forward pass, however, has been a Rebel strength this season. Seniors Lee Bristol and Kody Harris combined for three interceptions during last week’s 41-0 shutout of Dobyns-Bennett. Junior Stian Romberg and sophomore Dalton Curtis round out a secondary where everyone has at least one pick on the season. Junior linebacker Jared Miller is really making a name for himself in recent weeks.
