Deputies tutor Heritage High students on safe driving

Heritage High School students spent an afternoon at the Blount County Sheriff’s Office driving track getting some tips on defensive driving and learning some lessons on the effect of alcohol on judgment and driving skills.

With the help of “drunk goggles,” students experienced the effects of how alcohol slows reaction times. Simple actions like catching a ball or walking were made more difficult when students donned the “drunk goggles” that drastically challenged their motor skills and perceptions.Heritage High School driver’s education students spent an afternoon at the Blount County Sheriff’s Office driving track getting some tips on defensive driving and learn some lessons on the effect of alcohol on judgment and driving skills.

Driver’s education teacher Brandon Waters took 20 of his students on the field trip to the Blount County Sheriff’s Office training facility. The students go to see a simulated extraction from an overturned car, and, with the help of “drunk goggles,” students experienced the effects of how alcohol slows reaction times. Simple actions like catching a ball or walking were made more difficult when students donned the “drunk goggles” that drastically challenged their motor skills and perceptions.

On the driving track, students learned defensive driving skills. Deputies watched and gave directions to students who were allowed to drive cruisers. The Sheriff’s Office driving track and shooting range is located on Honeysuckle Road in Blount County near William Blount High School.

BCSO officials said they hope the program will expand to include more classes at Heritage and William Blount high schools, and the middle schoolture, to all driver’s education classes at Heritage and William Blount High Schools.
