The stars were at their “aruggh” best -- Jim Hawkins (Preston Butler), Long John Silver (Elijah Wenndt), Captain Flint (Juliette Blais), Ben Gunn (Jacob Carpenter) and Gentleman Jack (Elijah Spencer).
The supporters were gnarly and focused as well -- Lighthouse Jenny (Emily Johnson), Quarterdeck Donna (Emmie Trentham), Yardarm Annie (Dana Conzemius), Meg Trueblood (Tabitha Coulter) and Lady Trelawney (Victoria Jackson).
The cast of more than 50 set sail in early April for a Primary Players’ production of “Treasure Island” at the Maryville High School auditorium. Three performances of the play cumulated months of happy and hard work, as the Players participated in rehearsals, workshops and work sessions to get ready for the production.
The Primary Players Children’s Theater Group, a non-profit, volunteer organization, was founded by Nikki Andrews, formerly a third-grade teacher at Sam Houston Elementary School. Play directors are John Cherry, choreographer Melanie Cherry and Greg Wenndt.
The young actors are not only given stage experience, but are also taught elements of stagecraft, including costuming, makeup and set design. The Primary Players volunteers attempt to expose each cast to all aspects of a theater production, including learning how to prompt the actors, become an understudy, blocking and staging.
For more information about the program, including enrollment and upcoming camps and productions, contact Sonia Wenndt at 865-405-8826.
