The 2009 recipient of the Leadership Blount Community Leadership Award is as “close to home” as it gets.
On Friday, April 3, Leadership Blount will honor Joe Dawson, administrator of Blount Memorial Hospital, at the 10th annual Community Leadership Award breakfast. The breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Maryville.
Part of the first ever Leadership Blount class in 1991, Dawson has served as administrator of Blount Memorial Hospital since 1985 and in that capacity the hospital has grown not only in scope of services and facility capacity, but as an integral component in the community. Through Dawson’s leadership, Blount Memorial has been involved in several critical community issues including environmental health, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse and mental health. Additionally, Dawson’s past and present scope of community service reaches beyond health care and includes service to Maryville College, United Way of Blount County, Blount County Children’s Home, the Heritage Foundation, the East Tennessee Foundation, and the Blount County Chamber of Commerce, among others.
“Joe Dawson exemplifies what it means to be caring and compassionate,” said Herb Handly, Chairman of Leadership Blount. “We are extremely fortunate to have an individual like Joe in our community who not only devotes so much to community service, but encourages others to do the same.”
Dawson is married to Sue, and together they have two children, David Dawson, 30, and Caroline Dawson, 25.
The Community Leadership Award is given based on several criteria. Nominees must have demonstrated a commitment to leadership in Blount County, exercised leadership in a variety of community positions, helped develop future leaders and used leadership positions to promote the development of the community. Previous recipients of the award have been the late Harwell Proffitt, Tutt Bradford, Dean Stone, Dr. Sue Wyatt, Geraldine Upton, Joe Ingram, Gary Hensley, Joy Bishop and Fred Forster.
