Groups raise funds with pre-loved literature

If great minds think alike, then used book sales must be a brilliant fundraising idea. Both the Mt. Lebanon Relay for Life Team and the Mary E. Tippitt Memorial Library in Townsend recently held sales to raise money for their respective causes of cancer research and literacy.

Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church’s Relay for Life Team, the Freedom Fighters, held its sale on Feb. 6 and 7 in the church’s welcome center. Displayed was a wide selection of children’s books, inspirational works, Christian novels, coffee table books and media items like CDs and DVDs. Shoppers searched for bargains, and American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life on May 29 will reap the benefits of their generosity.

At the Mary E. Tippitt Memorial Library Sale, held Feb. 6, the abundance of books was accompanied by freshly baked goods, which competed for the attention of browsing patrons. Tables held multiple layers of books for sale, and even windowsills were filled with stacks of paperbacks. Proceeds from the sale benefited the library, which offers after-school programs for kids, an adult book club and free computer access.

The Mary E. Tippitt Memorial Library is located at 120 Tiger Drive in Townsend, and can be reached at 865-448-1441. Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church is located at 3508 Wildwood Rd. in Maryville and can be reached at 865-983-4200 or 865-977-4044.

The 2009 Relay for Life in Blount County will be May 29 at Maryville College. To sign up a new team, contact Elizabeth McKnight at
