Blount County Mayor Jerry Cunningham is recuperating following shoulder surgery on March 2. The procedure was done to repair damage from a horse accident more than two weeks ago, Cunningham said.
The mayor said he broke his scapula and a number of ribs on his left side. “They did surgery. My rotator cuff was pretty much destroyed and they reset the bicep muscle,” he said. “The rotator cuff consists of four tendons, and three of them could not be reattached. The other muscles will compensate over time.”
Cunningham said he’s definitely been in pain following the accident. “I’ve got a pretty high pain threshold but this one hurts,” he said.
The mayor said he should start rehabilitation in about a month. “I had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder and didn’t have much trouble but it wasn’t as damaged as this one,” he said. “I won’t be entering any arm wrestling contests for a while.”
