Foothills Community Players final play -- ‘Same Time, Next Year’-- chosen by public vote

Foothills Community Players is wrapping up their premiere season with a vintage favorite selected by Blount County’s theatre audience. “Same Time, Next Year,” by Bernard Slade, will hit the stage at the Alumni Gym on Maryville College campus, today, June 4 through Sun., June 7. The play was selected from a list of eight candidates through on-line polling and surveys conducted at Last Friday Art Walks.

This final production of FCP’s inaugural season is directed by Nicci Williamson and is produced by Jeff Eberting. The cast features Jennifer Phillips and Jerrico Bleu as the younger Doris and George and Aja Rodriguez and Ken Merritt as the older Doris and George. Merritt appeared in FCP’s first production as Oscar Madison in The Odd Couple. The other cast members are performing in their first FCP production.

The romantic comedy opened in 1975 on Broadway and was made into a movie in 1979, starring Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn, receiving an Academy Award nomination.

It is the story of two married people who have a chance encounter in a country inn in California in 1951. Slade lures the audience, somewhat reluctantly, to the cottage by the sea where George and Doris begin their 24-year affair. They agree to meet at the cottage the same time next year.

As the play progresses in five-year increments, they cope with their lives and share their joys, successes, losses and sadness. Each new scene reflects the social changes of the 50s, 60s and 70s as we watch them grow from young lovebirds into mature adults. We watch Doris evolve from being a young mother to a hippie phase as a college student into a professional business entrepreneur. George, though not as dramatic in his evolution, leaves the uptight businessman behind to discover his sensitive side as they both move into middle age.
