Postal Service says ‘Can-do’ for families in need

Postal service workers in Blount County had more than letters in their vehicles in early May when they participated in a food drive to help Community Food Connection and Chilhowee Baptist Center collect food for the needy.

The National Association of Letter Carriers, in conjunction with the United States Postal Service, Campbell’s Soup, United Way of America and America’s Second Harvest, collected non-perishable food items like canned soup, canned fruit, canned vegetables, cereal and rice on May 9 to help families in need in the community.

Blount residents who wanted to help were asked to place food donations by their mailboxes before 9 a.m. The donations were picked up by the letter carriers.

Maryville Post Office collections were donated to the Community Food Connection, and Alcoa Post Office collections went to Chilhowee Baptist Center.

Local postal services, United Way of Blount County, Community Food Connection and Chilhowee Baptist Center worked together on the food drive.
