Though Ciao Deli at The Market has been replaced by an outpost of Townsend’s Sister Cats Café, the popular Ciao Beer Tastings have lived on. The tastings are organized by Todd White, owner of Ciao Deli, and each features a sampling of beers from a single brewery. Sister Cats has taken over most of Ciao Deli’s former space, but White maintain a selection of imported beers and microbrews at The Market.

April’s tasting, held on April 23, featured Highland Brewing Company, out of Asheville, North Carolina. The event was held outside on a warm evening, and Highland representative Steve Schwartz introduced tasters to such brews as the Cattail Peak Organic Wheat and the Oatmeal Porter.

The previous tasting, held on March 26, served beers from the Duck Rabbit Craft Brewery out of North Carolina, founded by a philosophy professor and named for a classic diagram meant to test perspective.

The Ciao Beer Club holds regular tastings, and members get discounts on beer and cheese as well as the half-price member rate at the tastings.

The next tasting, to be held on Friday, July 24, at 7:30 p.m., will feature four great summer beers, yet to be announced. Space is limited; to reserve a spot, call The Market at 865-980-7711, email Todd White at toddciao@charter.net or visit the store.

Friday will also mark the return of the popular Anchor Summer Beer, the last shipment of which sold out within hours, to The Market’s beer selection.
