Dental volunteers needed for free dental clinic

A free dental clinic is being offered for Kidney dialysis and transplant patients. Remote Area Volunteer Corps, the National Kidney Foundation Serving East Tennessee and University of Tennessee Transplant Office are collaborating to offer a free dental clinic for dialysis and transplant patients. The clinic is to be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the YMCA of East Tennessee at 616 Jessamine St.

Organizers for the event are in need of volunteer dentists, dental assistants and hygienists for this all day event. This is a life-saving clinic to help people receive an organ transplant or be eligible to receive an organ.

One of the biggest hopes many dialysis patients have is to receive a kidney transplant. In order to be considered for a kidney transplant, they have to go through an array of tests to show they are healthy enough to carry the new kidney, as well as be free of infection. Dental work is often needed to free the mouth from potential infections. This can be very costly and extensive dental work is not often covered my many insurance companies.
