Mother of Blount Today sports editor dies

Priscilla Maye Cooper, mother of Blount Today Sports Editor Stefan Cooper, died Tuesday evening at Blount Memorial Hospital.

Ms. Cooper, 74, was born in Paducah, Ky., and moved to Blount County when her father, a pastor, came to establish a Church of God congregation in Alcoa.

She is survived by her three sons: Stefan Cooper, Alcoa; Maurice Cooper, Jacksonville, Fla., and Dwight Cooper, Alcoa.

Priscilla Cooper graduated from Charles M. Hall High School in Alcoa in the early 1950s. She worked as a nurse’s aid for several years. A faithful member of Mother of Love Baptist Church in Louisville, her minister spoke of her devotion to the church, community and family on Tuesday night. The Rev. Lorrin Harris said Ms. Cooper had “an unconditional love, unconditional support and unconditional acceptance of others.

“She was a wonderful person and a faithful member of Mother Love. She touched everyone there through the mission boards, the church board, the young people.”

Rev. Harris said Ms. Cooper was an exceptional speaker and powerful in her delivery on behalf of Jesus. “I heard her speak several times. She was inspiring in her delivery on behalf of Jesus,” he said.

Funeral arrangements are not yet complete. Unity Mortuary in Knoxville will be assisting with the burial. Service time is not yet set but will be at Mother Love Baptist Church, son Stefan indicated.
