March Madness at Fairview United Methodist Church benefits camp scholarships

With so much interest in college basketball’s March Madness, the men of Fairview United Methodist Church decided to make their own March Madness excitement. Several years ago the men organized two teams, one of men 29 years of age and younger and the other of men 30 and older, to play one basketball game on Sunday, March 1, at 6 p.m. in the church gymnasium. This game, played for the sake of having fun and fellowship, raises money for scholarships for children to attend Camp Wesley Woods in the summer.

According to organizer Wil Davenport, it is an "opportunity for participants and watchers to enjoy a game of basketball, have a brief worship experience at halftime, and donate money for more children in the church to attend summer camp." Approximately 150 people came to last year’s game. The older men enjoy the leadership of player/coach, Senior Pastor Jerry Russell, while the younger team, and reigning champions, is led by player/coach and Youth Minister Roger Williams.

Located in Townsend, Camp Wesley Woods offers week long, half week sessions, and day camps throughout the summer for rising first graders to seniors in high school. This residential camp focuses on small group camping that encourages family values, group building, and developing relationships with God. This wonderful outdoor environment provides a setting that shows the love of Christ and offers learning about God’s love for us and how He wants us to live. For more information about Camp Wesley Woods, visit www.campwesleywoods.com or call 865-448-2246.
