ETMG staff proves that ‘Wellness Works’

After a year of working for healthier lifestyles, scores of employees of East Tennessee Medical Group (ETMG) have successfully completed the company’s “Wellness Works” program.

“The program gave me a whole new perspective,” said Vanessa Skeen, ETMG human resources assistant. “Every day I see patients come in with problems I am at risk for. I incorporated the program into my every-day life, and find that keeping healthy is really an enjoyable way to live!”

Of the 124 ETMG employees that began the “Wellness Works” program in January 2008, 46 staff members finished the program. Employees earned credits, prizes and movie tickets for completing various health education and improvement activities. A total of $5,000 in cash, prizes and rewards was distributed to participants.

“I have seen the staff gain a new perspective throughout the year,” said Ron German, ETMG’s CEO. “From weight loss to smoking cessation, ETMG and its employees scored a win-win, and we’ll continue to do that…and surpass it…in 2009.”

Throughout the year, the wellness program encouraged employees to complete wellness activities, physical exams, online health education seminars, community event activities and stress management courses in order to receive credits toward prizes. “When I look at what indicates the success of the program, I can see it throughout the building,” said Sherry Reagan, ETMG director of human resources. “People are more motivated and they really put their heart and soul into trying this program. Getting our employees excited about making healthy lifestyle changes and feeling good about themselves is something that makes us very proud.”

East Tennessee Medical Group consists of more than 50 physicians and allied health professionals, and was a recipient of the 2008 TECHMED award for its use of innovative electronic medical records and patient care technology.
