Maryvillian wins top art prize

The winners of the Arts & Culture Alliance National Juried Exhibition of 2008 have been announced, and Carl Gombert of Maryville has taken the Best of Show prize of $700 with his piece “Lain.”

Gombert, an associate professor of art at Maryville College, was selected from the 212 submissions to the exhibition. Prize money totaling $1,700 was awarded to the five winners, all regional artists. The show will be on display at the Emporium Center, at 100 S. Gay Street, in Knoxville, from Dec. 15 - Jan. 14. A public reception will take place on Friday, January 2, from 5:00-9:00 PM with a brief awards ceremony at 6:00 PM as part of First Friday activities downtown.

“The Arts & Culture Alliance has sponsored an amazingly diverse group of talented regional and national artists in the 2008 National Juried Exhibition,” commented juror Angela Usrey. “I was honored to participate as juror and look forward to watching the careers of such a talented group of artists.” Other participants from Blount County include Shirley Brown and Katie Gamble.
