To complement its recent Scholastic Art Awards of East Tennessee, the Arts and Culture Alliance is presenting an exhibition of pieces by the six career artists who juried the awards.
The show will be exhibited at The Balcony (in the Emporium Center) in downtown Knoxville from Feb. 6-27. An opening reception for both the Art Awards and the exhibition will take place as part of First Friday activities downtown on Friday, Feb. 6 from 5-9 p.m.
The artists that judged the Scholastic Awards include Mark Hall, who is currently serving as Chair of the Division of Fine Arts and Associate Professor in the Art Department at Maryville College.
Says Hall, “I choose to express myself through the print media because of the rich and seductive look of ink upon paper and because once created I am able to part with and yet keep my work,” he says. “Whether it is the result of the numerous times I was dropped on my head or my contrarian nature, my prints and drawings tend to take on a satirical bent. I chose to question and explore that which most intimately surrounds me. Television, religious beliefs, cultural sacred cows, my ego, the environment in which I live or have lived, all come under scrutiny.”
Hall was born in Indianapolis, and has received degrees from Hanover College, Christian Theological Seminary, the University of Louisville and Indiana State University and did additional graduate studies at the University of Chicago. He has worked at both the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the David and Alfred Smart Museum.
The other artists in the exhibition include Lauren Kussro of Pellissippi State Technical Community College, Julie Rabun of Carson-Newman, Jered Sprecher of the University of Tennessee, Jennifer Stoneking-Stewart of Belmont University, and Bryan Wilkerson of Roane State Community College.
The Balcony is located in the Emporium Center, 100 S. Gay Street, downtown Knoxville. Both the Art Awards winners and the exhibition of works by the judges will be on display. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. with additional hours on Saturday, Feb.7, 11a.m. - 3 p.m. For more information, please contact Suzanne Cada at 865-523-7543, or visit www.knoxalliance.com.
