For folks at First United Methodist Church of Maryville, the first Sunday of December is always a fun day - for them and for people in the community.
Each year the congregation holds Family Fun Night. It’s a time where children and their parents, whether they attend the church or not, gather for a night of family-oriented fun, the Rev. Brenda Carroll said.
“This event has a very long history. We’ve been doing it for many years. It’s a time, especially for children, to make crafts and seasonal items for the home, for the tree or for their rooms,” she said. “We have food and a display of nativity scenes. It’s a family-oriented event built around children, but really for all ages.”
Carroll said folks from the community make a point of dropping by each year because they know the event is happening the first weekend of December. This year, it took place on Dec. 6. “They watch for it, and we open it up to the whole community,” she said. “We always do it the first weekend of December. We do a hanging of greens that morning in the sanctuary and then do Family Fun Night that evening. It is the beginning of the anticipation of Christmas.”
