Blount Today Sports Radio just completed its third year of football on WLHR 97.9FM, a partnership with Blount Today and East Maryville Baptist Church. During the football season, Blount Today Sports Radio broadcasted 18 games, including Alcoa’s record sixth straight TSSAA State Championship Game, plus The Maryville Orthopaedic Clinic Blount County High School Jamboree.
Part of the Blount Today Sports Radio fun is give-aways from the show’s underwriters to callers who are listening to the broadcasts. Giveaways this year included dinners, front-end alignments, pizza, gym memberships and gift certificates for pet food, said Blount Today advertising director Marty Millsaps, who does the play-by-play for the football games.
In addition, listeners were encouraged to sign-up on www.BlountToday.com for two grand prize giveaways -- a letterman jacket from Pokey’s and a Hummer Mountain Bike from Hummer of Knoxville.
“The mountain bike from Hummer would cost you about a $1,000 if purchased through retail, and the letterman’s jacket from Pokey’s is in the neighborhood of $500 once everything is added,” Millsaps said of the prizes.
The contest for the letter jacket and mountain bike was held online at www.BlountToday.com where listeners could go to the website and register to win. Eleven weekly winners were chosen in each category, with one winner chosen for each at the end of the regular season.
The winner of the letter jacket was Misty Whitt. “The timing could not have been better. (My son) Zach went just last week and got fitted for his jacket!” said Whitt, who won the letter jacket for her son, who plays quarterback for William Blount High School.
Andy Tinker of Pokey’s and Sports said he was just happy to give back to the athletic community that helps support his business. This is the third letter jacket that Pokey’s and Sports has given away.
The Hummer mountain bike winner was Danny Cooper.
“This will make a great Christmas present for my son,” said Cooper. “We listen every week and are regular callers for the weekly giveaways, but this is the first time we have won the grand prize. We are very thankful to the people at Hummer of Knoxville for this wonderful gift.”
“I grew up and went to school at Maryville and love the opportunity to partner with Blount Today,” said Tom Hodge, owner of Hummer of Knoxville about the bike giveaway. “We like to give a little back to our community.”
The Airport Honda, Hummer and Saturn of Knoxville Game of the Week could be heard every Friday night this past fall on WLHR 97.9 FM, with Joe Lambert, Dave Bennett, Heath Dunkel, Lauren Curbow and Marty Millsaps. Blount Today Sports Radio covered every high school in Blount County during the season and broadcast the championship game for Alcoa from Cookeville.
The Blount Today Sports Radio basketball schedule has yet to be determined, but Millsaps said the crew anticipates doing between 5 and 8 games, beginning in January. For information about the radio show and underwriters, call Millsaps at 865-981-9103.
