Earlier this fall the Friendsville community turned out in mass for the annual Friendsville Fun Day.
The Sept. 12 event has been going on for about 18 years and was started as a way for the Friendsville Fire Department to thank residents for their support.
“We started out just wanting to give back to the townspeople to thank them for helping us,” treasurer and department captain Marianna Smith said. “When we started having food, we wanted to cover costs, so we started charging a nominal amount for the food and some of the rides, but a lot of Fun Day is still free. It is more or less just to have good community relations with people of Friendsville.”
Smith said that while the event isn’t really considered a fundraiser, they did clear about $1,200.
Chief Tom Greene said the fire department wanted to show their appreciation to the town. “That’s the reason we set this up -- to give back to the community,” he said. “That’s why we call it a Fun Day for the Community. The community as a whole has been really good to the fire department.”
