Soccer Scots earn NSCAA Team Academic Awards

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has announced that the Maryville College men’s and women’s soccer programs have each been awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award.

Maryville coach Pepe Fernandez’s squads were one of only 97 schools from all divisions to have both programs earn this distinction. A total of 141 men’s collegiate programs and 326 women’s soccer squads have achieved a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

This is the 11th consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Award won by Fernandez’s women’s squads and 15th overall. The 2009 award is the seventh national academic award within the men’s program.

Five Lady Scots were named to the Great South Athletic Conference All-Academic Team in 2009. They include Jordan Chase, Morgan Goodman, Mandy Seiler, Jessica Petersen, and Jessica Thompson.

The men had 13 players earn league academic honors. Standouts in the classroom include Hunter Acosta, Travis Bolton, Ridge Carter, Daniel Gomez, Jake Holt, Robert Hudson, David Large, Ben Lawson, Chris Metts, Ryan Radcliffe, Jack Sowell, Tom Webster, and Cory Willis.
