Family and friends had a surprise for Al Grubb on his 60th birthday when they assembled in the gym of Madison Avenue Baptist Church recently.

Grubb, who is a vice president of Citizens Bank of Blount County, got a laugh out of the wheelchair they rolled out to meet him to give him a “ride” into his party -- due, of course, to his “over the hill” status. Grubb refused the ride good naturedly, spoke briefly and thanked everyone for attending and remembering him on his birthday.

A potluck dinner was served and the night was topped off with a birthday cake. The cake reflected one of Grubb’s favorite pastimes with a hunting scene on the cake.
