Retired BMH Medical Director receives leadership award

Dr. Samuel Evans, retired Blount Memorial Hospital medical director, was recently awarded the National Association of Medical Staff Services 2009 Leadership Award.

The award was presented to Evans at the National Association of Medics Staff Services (NAMSS) annual conference in October. Each year, the award is bestowed to a medical service professional, physician or health care administrator. The individual must be serving or have previously served in a leadership position on a hospital staff or health care organization that has demonstrated support for NAMMS or for the activities and role of the medical services professional.

NAMSS enhances the professional development of and recognizes professionals in the medical staff and credentialing services field. Their vision is to advance a health care environment that maximizes the patient experience through the delivery of quality services.

Evans served as medical director for Blount Memorial for 13 years until his retirement in January. Prior to his retirement, he was an obstetrician/gynecologist on active Blount Memorial staff and in private practice for 18 years. He has held medical staff leadership positions at the hospital, including serving as chief of the medical staff from July 1994 through May 1996. His leadership and clinical expertise as medical director led to excellence in multiple hospital initiatives. He now is a consultant for Premier Inc., where he performs mock surveys for hospitals across the nation.
