Students recently returned to the classrooms for the fall semester, but this summer many teachers from Blount County benefitted through some “summer school” called Lunch and Learn.
Regional businesses treated educators to the Lunch and Learn summer series. Teachers saw first hand how lessons they teach in the class can be applied in a real work environment.
Partners in the regional economic development initiative called Innovation Valley Inc. launched “Educators in the Workplace Lunch & Learn” series this summer for teachers and guidance counselors in Blount, Knox, Loudon and Roane counties and Oak Ridge. The Lunch & Learn series was an opportunity for educators to meet with business people in a workplace setting.
Educators learned ways to show students the relevance of what they learn in the classroom, heard ideas about incorporating workplace expectations into the classroom and observed firsthand how businesses operate.
Lunch was provided by the company hosting the event and members of various departments within the company provided information on the nature of the company’s business, the workplace culture and specifics on ways to connect what the students learn in the classroom with what is required in the workplace. Company representatives offered a tour of the workplace, which was followed by question and answer sessions.
The Blount Education Initiative, The Knoxville Chamber, The Roane Alliance, Loudon County Economic Development Agency and Oak Ridge Economic Partnership organized the Lunch and Learn series. Participants visited Roane Medical Center, Oak Ridge National Lab, Vinylex Corp., Clayton Homes, Toho Tenax America, Inc., 21st Mortgage, Energy Solutions and Astec Underground.
