Red Cross volunteers simulate shelter scenarios

The Blount County Chapter of the American Red Cross got ready for a disaster on Saturday, Aug. 15, with a Shelter Simulation at the Red Cross office.

Visitors were invited to learn the different aspects of shelter life as trained volunteers and staff showed how a shelter is set up during emergency or disaster situations.

Red Cross personnel explained equipment and told what would happen in different disaster scenarios. Guests also got to see how people communicate with others using HAM radio equipment.

Since 1917, the Blount County Chapter of the American Red Cross has carried out the Red Cross Mission on a local level. The Blount County Chapter offers training and education programs, including CPR, first aid, lifeguarding, learn to swim, disaster preparedness training and numerous youth oriented courses. In addition, the Blount Chapter provide services to individuals affected by disaster in their most critical time of need.
