New hires made for Blount County Animal Control

Blount County Mayor Jerry Cunningham recently hired three new people to manage and operate the Animal Control Department. The mayor hired the individuals who began work on April 2.

According to a press release, residents were asked to be patient as the new employees become acclimated to their jobs. “We ask the citizens of Blount County to bear with us for the next few days as these folks become acclimated to these jobs,” the mayor said. “We apologize to the citizens for the quality of Animal Control in the past and feel that drastic improvements will be immediately noticed.”

Leneen Evans has been hired as director of the Animal Control Department. She will be the overall manager of the new Blount County Animal Shelter when it is completed. Her experienced includes owning a kennel business with her husband.

The new dispatch/clerk is Jeanette Saddler. She will be in charge of records as well as receiving calls, requests and dispatching the Animal Control Field Officer. The new field officer is Lynn “Chubby” Burchfield. He is a lifelong Blount County resident and is presently undergoing on-the-job training which is being provided through the cooperation and courtesy extended by the City of Maryville and Loudon County Animal Control.

The hours during which the Animal Control telephone will be answered will be 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Calls left after 1 p.m. on the answering service will be promptly answered the following morning, with the exception of weekends.

The Animal Control Officer will be in the field Monday through Friday with the surrender day still being held at the old Hubbard School on Friday from 8 a.m. until noon. The new Animal Control telephone number is 865-980-6244.

The new Animal Shelter off of McArthur Road is expected to be operational by July 1, according to the press release. The first facet to be operational will the kennel and intake portion. Mayor Cunningham’s office is presently coordinating the construction and completion of that facet.
