Dr. Colton Smith joins Geneuity

Colton Smith, PhD, was named special projects software developer for Geneuity Clinical Research Services and its parent company, Molecular Pathology Laboratory Network, Inc. (MPLN).

“Dr. Smith has a wealth of knowledge in both computer science and molecular biology. Someone with his level of expertise in each of these areas is an extremely rare find, and we’re lucky to have him on board,” said Roger Hubbard, PhD, founder president and CEO of Geneuity and MPLN.

As the special projects software developer, one of Smith’s responsibilities will be developing advanced software programs to enhance the sophisticated data management and proprietary laboratory information management systems already utilized by MPLN and Geneuity. Smith will also focus his expertise on developing analysis and reporting of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP’s).

Smith is a Knoxville native and University of Tennessee graduate who holds an undergraduate degree in microbiology and a master’s degree in computer science. Smith also earned a PhD in virology/molecular biology from Harvard University. Following his studies at Harvard, Smith obtained post doctoral training at Cal Tech and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.

Geneuity focuses on innovative testing and custom assay design to support clinical trials and assay validation for in vitro device manufacturers, pharmaceutical and biotech companies and clinical research organizations. Geneuity offers technical and interpretive expertise in DNA sequencing, real time polymerase chain reaction, microarray analysis, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) characterization, fluorescent DNA fragment analysis, genome-wide gene expression microarrays, exon scanning, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, and cytogenetics.

Headquartered in a 29,000-square-foot facility in Maryville, Tenn., Geneuity is just three miles from McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville. With a dedicated flow cytometry laboratory in Richmond, Va., Geneuity offers an additional point of contact for all testing referred to the main laboratory. In addition, Geneuity provides a comprehensive menu of routine testing for chemistries, hematology, toxicology/drug screening, urinalysis and allergy through its satellite clinical facility, Ascendant Medical Laboratory, in Knoxville.

Geneuity is a subsidiary of Molecular Pathology Laboratory Network, Inc. (MPLN), a privately- held molecular diagnostic laboratory that offers a comprehensive selection of molecular diagnostics and cytogenetic testing that targets hematology, oncology, obstetrics, gynecology, medical genetics, gastroenterology and infectious disease.

MPLN is certified by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and licensed by the states of Tennessee, New York, Florida and Maryland.

Ascendant Medical Laboratory is a clinical regional reference laboratory in Knoxville that delivers, fast turn-around time and a full-service test menu of routine and specialized procedures. Ascendant is licensed and accredited by CLIA, Center for Medicaid & Medicare Services (CMS) and the state of Tennessee.
