Medic Regional Blood Center is proud to partner with Blount Memorial Hospital and Nisus Corporation, a green pest control solution company, located in Rockford for the 5th Annual Eddie Kirkland Memorial Blood Drive and Free PSA Test on Friday, September 19 at New Midland Plaza from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Kevin Kirkand, president of Nisus Corporation, organized this event years ago as a way to honor the memory of his father who lost his battle to prostate cancer at a very young age. The PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test is offered free to males whether or not they donate a pint of blood to the community. “It’s a simple blood test that can possibly save a life,” states Christi Fightmaster, Medic spokesperson.
“This event provides a great community service while educating men in the Blount County area about prostate cancer and the importance of early detection,” says Kirkland,” I lost my dad at a very young age and the purpose of this event is to prevent that from happening to other sons.” All donors are welcome to stop by and give blood but the free PSA test will be offered to men over the age of 35 unless there is a family history then anyone can get the free test. There will be two 40ft buses ready to accommodate all donors—male and female.
Everyone who donates a pint of blood to Medic will receive a free UT vs UF t-shirt, coupon for a pint of Mayfield Ice Cream, a free cholesterol evaluation and a year’s credit towards Medic’s Family Blood Coverage Program. This program exempts donors from paying blood processing and collection fees anywhere in the U.S. if a transfusion is required. For those who cannot donate a pint of blood, a sample of blood will be drawn by Blount Memorial Hospital for the free test.
