No William Blount High School football team has ever lost them all in a season.
Friday, Heritage is going to do everything it can to change that when the Mountaineers visit William Blount’s Mike White Field in the season finale for both teams. With a Heritage loss, the Governors (0-9, 0-6) will leapfrog the Mountaineers (1-8, 0-6) out of the Region 2-5A cellar, the last year of the league before reclassification.
With four-time defending 2A champion Alcoa and four-time defending 4A champion Maryville, essentially, making ready for the playoffs with their respective regular season finishes tonight, the Mountaineers and Governors will have the stage all to themselves on Friday.
The top-ranked Tornadoes (8-1, 5-0 Region 2-2A) host Loudon (6-3, 5-0) in the region championship game at 7:30 at Goddard Field. The 1978 Alcoa state championship team will be honored prior to the game, with a reception scheduled in the school gymnasium at 6:45 p.m.
The top-ranked Rebels (9-0, 6-0) are on the road at Lenoir City (1-8, 0-6) for a 7:30 kickoff in hopes of extending the nation’s second-longest active winning streak to 70 games. Maryville clinched its eighth consecutive region crown with a 42-0 shutout of South-Doyle two weeks ago.
After a bye week, Maryville College hops back in the saddle with a trip to Methodist College. Kickoff Saturday in Fayetteville, N.C., is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Scots (3-4, 2-2 USA South Athletic Conference) fell 27-23, to the Monarchs (1-6, 0-4) a year ago at Honaker Field. With three games remaining, each a league contest, Maryville is looking to turn the tables on Methodist and continue pursuit of bettering last season’s 4-3 conference finish.
