November 2008 Calendar of Events at Blount County Public Library

With the holidays just around the corner, several programs offer opportunities for beginning to get into the holiday spirit. Two authors will be presenting programs about their books, and this year, there will be two Tellabration! storytelling events, one for young children and their parents and the other for families of all ages.

And, if you’ve always wanted to know how to play Mahjongg, the Maryville Mahjongg League will be doing several hours of demonstration of the game, with invitations to join in for any interested players who want to learn to play the game.

As usual, there will be a variety of events at the library.


• Multiple Dates and Times during the month of December, “Holiday Concerts at the Library” by schools, church groups, and other groups in the Reading Rotunda.


• Thursday, Nov. 6, 7 p.m.: “Backpacking Stories” presentation and slides by Sue Jenkins, author, at the Blount County Public Library in the Sharon Lawson Room.

• Tuesday, Nov. 11, LIBRARY CLOSED, in honor of Veterans’ Day.

• Thursday, Nov. 13, 7 p.m.: “Heart in the Right Place” by Carolyn Jourdan, author, at Blount County Public Library in the Sharon Lawson Room.

• Saturday, Nov. 15, 11 a.m.: “Tellabration! for young children and their parents” by storytellers Lovella Richardson, Janice Brooks-Headrick, Mary Peterson, Shirley Nicholson, Millie Sieber, and emcee Rick Love. They plan to tell these stories: “The Ferocious Feline”, “Gods Well”, “Happy Birthday”, “Goodnight, I’ll Love You Forever”, and an origami story in the Sharon Lawson Room.

• Tuesday, Nov. 18, 9:45 a.m. - 2:45 p.m.: “Learn Mahjongg” demonstrations and invitation to the public to play along by Barbara Zurl and the Maryville Mahjongg League in the Entry Rotunda.

• Tuesday, Nov. 18, 6 p.m.; “Blount County Public Library Board of Trustees Meeting,” in the Board Room.

• Thursday, Nov. 20, 7 p.m.: “Tellabration! Storytelling for families” by professional storytellers Faye Wooden and Charles Maynard in the Dorothy Herron Room B.

• Thursday and Friday, Nov. 27 and 28, LIBRARY CLOSED for Thanksgiving


• “Teen” Exhibit in the Teen Central area of the library.

• “Nutcrackers” Exhibit by Brenda Pasqua in two display cases in the Main Gallery of the library.

• “House of Santa Mouse Craft Exhibit” featuring crafts by the Blount County Arts and Crafts Guild, in one vertical case and two cube display cases in the Entry Rotunda of the library.

• “G. Alan Sieve Photography” Display on Art Panels at the Reading Rotunda of the Main Gallery.

• “Wood Sculpture” Exhibit by Olga Rader in one vertical display case in the Entry Rotunda.

• “Tribute to Grandparents Exhibit” by Deb Barnett, in one cube in the Entry Rotunda.

• “Bryce Lyons Photos Exhibit” by Bryce Lyons on three easels in the Main Gallery.

• “Blount County Arts & Crafts Guild Member Artwork” Exhibit on the Art Wall at the Bookmark Café and on two easels in sitting areas of the Main Gallery.

• “Genealogy” Exhibit by Blount County Reference Department, in Genealogy display case in the Reference area of the library.

• “Circulation Exhibit” by Blount County Public Library staff, on the Circulation Desk Cabinets and New Books Shelves in the Main Gallery of the library.

COMPUTER CLASSES: FREE two hour classes. First six persons to arrive can attend class. Call or come by the Reference Desk at 865-273-1436 for schedule of classes or if there are questions.

Special Programs:

• Saturday, Nov. 15, 11 am, Tellabration for elementary aged children and their parents. This special storytelling program is presented by members of the Smoky Mountain Storytellers Association as an official program of the National Storytelling Network. Storytellers will be Lovella Richardson, Janice Brooks-Headrick, Mary Peterson, Shirley Nicholson, Millie Sieber, and emcee Rick Love. The story hour will be presented in the Children’s Reading Pond.

• November 16-22 is National Children’s Book Week, “Tell me a Story”.

• Saturday, Nov. 22, 3 pm, Fine Arts Blount Children’s Art Fun will be presented at the craft tables in the Children’s Library.

Foreign Language Story Hours: Community volunteers will present bilingual stories and crafts for all interested children. Please call the library to verify that story hour will be held as scheduled:

• First Monday, Nov. 3, 6:30 p.m., Amigos Spanish Story Hour

• First Wednesday, Nov. 5, 5 p.m., Japanese Story Hour

• First Saturday, Nov. 1, 2 p.m., Mes Amis French Story Hour

• Last Saturday, Nov. 29, 3 p.m., Italian Story Hour

Elementary Age Activities:

• Monthly Surprise Display will be showcased in the children’s library office window. The monthly topic will not be publicized, but children can guess the theme by reading clues on the library’s website, Visit the children’s library to see if you guessed the correct display topic.

• Fiction Favorites - Kids’ Reviews. Read Juvenile Fiction books, write and share reviews. Find book review forms and logs at Children’s Check-out desk.

• Tuesdays, 4 p.m., Serendipity Activities, Grades K-6, in Children’s Library. Sign up in Children’s Library to participate with new crafts.

• Nov. 4 - Grades 3-6, Leaf mats

• Nov. 11 - Grades K-2, LIBRARY CLOSED

• Nov. 18 - Grades 3-6, 3-D Dragons

• Nov. 25 - Grades K-2, Quilt

• Wednesdays (once Quarterly), 4 p.m., Library Skills Workshops are offered quarterly to teach proper use of the Dewey Decimal System, Reference, Online Computer Research, and book location. Watch for announcements of next class or ask at Children’s Library Desk.

• Thursday, Nov. 13, 2-5 p.m., Serendipity Activities with Surplus Crafts, Grades K-6, in Children’s Library.

• Thursdays, 4 p.m., Treasure Hunts are themed book searches and games where children follow the clues to the treasure box. “Road Trip” for Grades 5-6 will be Nov. 6; Grades 3-4 will be Nov. 20.

• Thursday, Nov. 20, 6:30 p.m., Kids’ Studio Art Class offered by YEStudio (Youthful Expressions Studio) as a FREE community service project. This monthly art class will usually be offered on the third Thursday of each month. Children ages 7-12 will enjoy classes that include colored pencil drawing, watercolors, and pastels.

• Sundays, Family Game Day. Families with children of all ages can enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of board games, puzzles, hopscotch, toddler bowling, play huts, and more.

Pre-School Story Hours & Crafts in Children’s Library Reading Pond: November Children’s Theme: “Tell me a Story”

• Tuesday and Friday, 10 a.m., Bubbles & Books story hours for ages 3-5 include bubbles, stories, puppets, fun, and crafts.

• Tuesday evening, 6:30 p.m., Twilight Tales story hour offers pre-school age children an interactive and relaxing hour of stories, show & tell, and activities.

• Wednesday, 10 and 10:30 a.m., Tadpole Tales story hours for ages two and under include stories, songs & movement, rhyme time, puppets, crafts, and coloring.

• Second Saturday of each month, Nov. 8, 2 pm, Children’s Yoga Story Time offers ages 4-5 an interactive story hour with playful yoga poses. Sessions are presented by a certified yoga instructor. Bring a towel and stuffed animal to the Dorothy Herron Room B.

• First Sunday of each month, Nov. 2, 4 p.m., Musical Story Hour is offered by a professional presenter with stories, fun movement, and exploration of musical instruments for children ages birth to 5 years old.

Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.
