Roller skating took center stage on Wednesday, Nov. 5, when the Area 15 Special Olympics took over Smoky Mountain Skate Center for a morning of warm-ups, skating and competition.
Alcoa Middle, Eagleton Middle, Maryville High and Independent students were all on hand to show their stuff on the roller rink. Robbie Ellis lead the Special Olympic Oath and a special thanks was given to Jeff Kay, owner of Smoky Mountain Skate Center for the facilities and his help with the games.
The Area 15 Special Olympics Program is open to Blount County citizens age 8 years and older. The ultimate goal is to help persons with intellectual disabilities participate in sporting and other activities to foster good self-esteem and have a good time. It is managed through Parks & Rec.
