MEDIC needs blood due to increase in demand

Medic Regional Blood Center is asking all eligible donors to please give blood. Summer months are some of the most difficult for the Knoxville based community blood bank. “Donors are busier during the summer months and blood donation can fall pretty low on the priority list. However, the need for blood tends to increase during the summer which can lead to a dangerous situation of not having enough blood to supply the area’s need,” said Christi Fightmaster, Medic spokesperson. Medic is currently seeking all blood types.

All donors will be eligible for a weekly drawing of two Tennessee Smokies home game tickets. Along with a T-shirt, donors will also receive a coupon for a free sandwich from Chick-fil-A. All donors will also receive a free cholesterol evaluation and a year’s credit toward Medic’s Family Blood Coverage Program. This program exempts donors and their IRS dependents from paying blood processing fees at any hospital in the U.S. if a transfusion is needed.

Community blood drives planned include:

• June 3, Shannondale of Maryville, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., inside conference room.

• June 6, Blount Memorial Hospital, 907 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., inside auditorium.

All donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh 110 pounds or more and have positive identification.
