Wortham posts top state mark for pentathlon
Maryville High School senior Ellen Wortham recorded the top qualifying mark for the state meet when she won the Section 1AAA Pentathlon last week at Jefferson County High School. Wortham took out a state-best 3,375 points in winning the five-event discipline, posting wins in the high jump and hurdles, finishing second in the long jump. Next best among state meet qualifiers was Ravenwood junior Courtney Woodard with 3,250 points, with Hunters Lane’s Akia McSwain (3,122), Knox West’s Maddie Treasure (2,970) and Lebanon’s Eli Icelyn (2,875) rounding out the top five. Maryville’s Ashley Bridenbaugh also qualified for the state meet May 19 at Middle Tennessee State University, finishing among the top four statewide who did not win sectional championships.
