While April showers are bringing May flowers, the Blount County area should be set for a continuation of beautiful blooms.
As a special treat for the community, Jack B. Carman, acclaimed author of Wildflowers of Tennessee, will speak and show slides of wildflower photographs from his book at 7 p.m., on Monday, May 12, at the Blount County Public Library.
Recognized by both professionals and peers, Carman shares his expertise in photography and knowledge of the Volunteer State wildflowers and their habitat at other area programs such as through photography workshops for the Gatlinburg Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and as a presenter at the Wilderness Wildlife Week event in Pigeon Forge.
With a long-time interest in both photography and wildflowers, Carman spent many years traveling across the state, photographing wildflowers and researching their identity, habitats and environments. Because the state has such diversity of terrain—from the Mountains of East Tennessee to the plains of West Tennessee with the plateau of Middle Tennessee in between, the variety of species of flora in the book is extensive, with captivating photographs, thus offering the first comprehensive state-wide guide to wildflowers in Tennessee.
The book describes more than 1,100 species, with more than 780 full-color photographs, placing the plant color plates and descriptions side by side. Each description provides locations where the plants can be found.
A Tennessee resident since 1963 and employed as an Engineer Specialist by Sverdrup Technology, Inc., Carman was born in Mississippi where he graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in Aerospace Engineering.
Free and open to the public, the program is at the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville.
