During the 2008 Senior Leadership Awards Banquet late last month, Maryville College athletics director Randy Lambert announced the recipients of the J.D. Davis Award. The female recipient of the award is Rachel Rushworth.
Rushworth was selected by the athletic department staff from an outstanding group of senior student-athletes. The finalists included: Jennifer Seivers, an All-American volleyball player; Samantha Thearp, a speedy All-Great South outfielder for the softball team; Mary Catherine Moore, who excelled in volleyball and tennis; and Katie Saxe, a two-time All-Great South post-player who led the Scots in scoring and rebounding.
Rushworth, an English major with teacher licensure, was named on three occasions to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team, twice to the NSCAA All-South squad, and a three time Great South All-Academic team member.
During her senior year, Rushworth was elected student body president and served as student representative on the Maryville College Board of Directors. She earned Great Player of the Year honors as a sophomore and All-South accolades following her final three seasons. The 2007 Maryville team most valuable player finished her career ranked seventh in seasonal assists, sixth in career points, sixth in career goals, and fifth in career assists.
Her Scots were an amazing 43-0-1 against Great South competition in four years, with Maryville reaching four consecutive NCAA National Tournaments. Her senior year, the Scots finished 17-5-1 and led the nation in scoring with an average of 5.04 goals per game.
