Jim Melton, a former candidate for the State Senate, will seek the office of State Representative for the 20th District, in the August Republican primary.
Melton emphasized his desire for smaller government and his commitment to conservative values. “We need true conservatives in Nashville that will fight for the traditional values that made the Republican Party the party of Ronald Reagan. I will fight for less government spending and more respect for the taxpayers’ pocketbooks. I will strengthen present legislation, or introduce new ones, that will make it more difficult for government to increase our taxes. I will introduce legislation that will make government more accessible to its citizens, and I will lead a crusade to compel government to become more responsive to the needs of the citizens and not the wants of its politicians,” Melton said.
Melton said he continues to be concerned about the growth in government and uncontrolled taxation. “Tax increases should be voted on by the citizens. It’s our money, and they should ask us before they take it,” he said.
Melton is a native of Blount County, having been raised in the Eagleton Village community, where he now lives. He is 1965 graduate of Alcoa High School, and attended Hiwassee College before entering the Army during the Vietnam War. He served in the Army Security Agency’s special intelligence division and received several commendations for his service. Upon his discharge, Melton returned home and began a 37-seven year career as a business owner, hospital executive and consultant, and now works as senior commercial credit analyst for Twenty-First Mortgage Corp.
He serves as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals for Blount County, and previously served as a member of the Personnel Board for the City of Hendersonville, Tenn., where he lived for 10 years. Melton is a member of Broadway Baptist Church of Maryville and has served in several community organizations.
