Applications for Blount Memorial Hospital’s Junior Volunteer Program are available from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the ground-floor information desk seven days per week. The program is for teenagers interested the health care environment.
Junior volunteers are placed in a service area based on their interests and schedules. “We have volunteers working in various departments such as nursing, radiology, pharmacy, materials management and administrative jobs,” said volunteer services director Connie Slingluff.
Young people interested in volunteering in a nursing area have an additional orientation and training opportunity through the new Learn to Assist program. The program includes a course on bed making, bathing and feeding, and it gives junior volunteers an opportunity to have hands-on experience and see what nursing is like. After they have completed the course, junior volunteers work with licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants throughout the hospital.
Applicants must be under 18 and have turned 14 by June 1. The deadline for applications is Monday, April 7. Junior volunteers who have worked previous summers also must re-apply by that date.
