With approval from the executive committee of Maryville College’s Board of Directors, Dana K. Smith, chief financial officer of Salem College, has been named MC’s new vice president and treasurer. He will begin his duties at the College in May.
As vice president and treasurer of the College, Smith will have responsibility for all financial matters of the College, as well as oversight of employees and programs in the business services and human resources offices. In concert with the College’s president and board of directors, Smith will be expected to engage in strategic discussions and develop programs to strengthen the financial resources of the College and to devise effective methods to communicate about financial matters. Among many other duties, he will also serve on the College’s Planning Budget and Advisory Committee (PBAC).
Smith has served Salem College, a four-year, private liberal arts college for women in Winston-Salem, N.C., since 2002. His previous work experience includes service as associate vice president for planning, budget and institutional research at St. Petersburg (Fla.) College, assistant director of finance with the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, director of accounting and auditing with the West Virginia Public Defender Services in Charleston, W.V., and controller for the West Virginia Legal Services Corporation, Inc.
A certified public accountant since 1987, Smith earned his master’s degree in business administration from Amberton University in Garland, Texas, in 2006. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from West Virginia University State College and has studied at the University of Kentucky’s College Business Management Institute.
Maryville College President Gerald Gibson said members of the College’s search committee were impressed with Smith’s experience and agreed that he possessed the special qualities needed to serve as the next chief financial officer of the campus.
“His interactions with and responses to campus citizens, and the feedback from references who have worked with him previously, all point to his promise as Maryville’s vice president and treasurer,” Gibson added. “He has wide experience, valuable technical expertise and a proven track record. Moreover, he has integrity, interpersonal skills and a deep appreciation of and experience in a church-related, liberal arts college setting. We are excited about having him here to provide leadership in the financial area and participate in the life of the College.”
