Shiba named Maryville College’s Outstanding Advisor

Kathie Shiba, an associate professor of psychology at Maryville College, was recognized with the Outstanding Advisor award during the college’s Leadership Awards Ceremony held April 29 in the Alumni Gymnasium.

Presented annually to an advisor of a student club or organization, the award recognizes the individual who has helped his or her organization to meet its goals and contribute significantly to the student activities at the college.

Shiba has been a “mover and shaker behind the scenes” since she joined the faculty in 1994, according to Maryville College Vice President and Dean of Students Vandy Kemp.

“She exemplifies what an effective advisor is by guiding, facilitating, encouraging and fostering student growth and leadership in all the groups she works with - and she does, indeed, advise several organizations, including the [Gay-Straight Alliance], [Omicron Delta Kappa] and the Peace and World Concerns group,” Kemp said. “She always remembers that she is a teacher first, and the student members of her organizations acknowledge that they do, indeed, develop and learn because of her effective leadership and the opportunities she provides.”
