The Girls on the Run 5-K on May 4 brought girls ages 8 to 12 together for a fun time of fitness and fellowship.
The Girls on the Run of Greater Knoxville organized the event that took place at Springbrook Park in Alcoa. Executive Director Raellen Simpson said the after-school program does events in the fall and spring and has been active since 2007 in Blount County.
“We meet once a week to teach them about a healthy lifestyle, including self-esteem and sportsmanship. Throughout the 12 weeks we include running and stretching,” Simpson said. “It is designed to show them they can exercise and have fun and build self-esteem. At the end of 12-weeks, we host a race, and their goal is to finish it. This is the first time we’ve done it in Blount County.”
Girls from throughout Blount County can participate. “Pretty much all the Blount County elementary schools are involved. We actually go through the Friends after school program, and they help us coordinate it and provide coaches. That’s a huge help,” Simpson said.
