Local Blount County band Turkeys in the Straw will hold a concert on Thursday, Aug. 7, to benefit the Community Food Connection of Blount County.
The concert will take place at the Blount County Public Library from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7. Attendees will need to bring a non-perishable food item as the cost of admission for the concert. Suggested non-perishable food donations include, but are not limited to, canned items, including vegetables, meats, fruits and meals; plastic containers of peanut butter and jelly; macaroni and cheese; pasta and cereal and crackers.
In the past several months, the Community Food Connection has seen an increase in demand for food.
“Due to the challenging economy, many Blount County families are finding themselves in a situation of deciding between buying food for their families or filling up their tanks to work,” said Lisa Blackwood, community food connection president. “People are turning to the Community Food Connection to provide them with basic food necessities. Our cash and food donations are down, and we need the community to help us by donating food and money to allow us to maintain the amount of food we can give.”
The number of families and people who visit the food connection has increased significantly. In June 2008, the food connection fed a total of 1,079 families, compared to June 2007, when it fed nearly 200 fewer families. The group also fed 650 more people in June 2008 then in June 2007.
Concert attendees can bring a cash donation to the concert in lieu of food items if preferred. Community members can also send cash donations to the Community Food Connection of Blount County, Inc., P.O. Box 786, Alcoa, TN 37701.
