Local entrepreneur gives back through Synergy HomeCare

After six years in the lumber business and managing his family’s Caribbean tourism and hospitality ventures, Kyle Hooker is now servicing the in-home, non-medical needs of residents in Blount, Knox, and Loudon counties from his Synergy HomeCare office at 1410 Sevierville Road in Maryville, the company’s first location in the Volunteer State.

Since graduating from Maryville College in 2002, Kyle worked as a commercial airline pilot in the Cayman Islands and sales manager for his family’s lumber business, Cox Lumber Co., managing three locations in the Orlando, Florida area. When the company was sold in 2006 to HD Supply, a division of The Home Depot, Kyle transitioned into a Vice Presidential role with Cox Lumber Ltd., his family lumber business located in the Cayman Islands, to oversee the company operations. While enjoying his work, Kyle has been looking for a way to truly impact the lives of others and found one through an incident that hit quite close to home.

“When my grandmother passed away last year, I realized that my grandfather, from Loudon, Tennessee, was going to be in a particularly difficult situation. Having macular degeneration leaving him 85 percent blind, he would have a hard time completing day-to-day activities on his own,” said Kyle. “If he was going to need help, opening a high-quality homecare business would be the perfect way to help my grandfather and countless other individuals sharing in his circumstances in our area.”

Kyle researched a variety of in-home, non-medical homecare concepts and found that one name - Synergy HomeCare - kept coming up at the top of every list. When he flew to the company headquarters in Arizona and met founder Peter Tourian and his team, Kyle’s assumptions were confirmed: Synergy HomeCare would be his new business.

“After meeting Peter and his team, I knew Synergy was a perfect fit not only from a personality standpoint but from a values, missions, objectives, and systems standpoint as well,” said Kyle. “They have invested in the latest technology to help their owners manage their businesses more effectively. More importantly, their short and long-term visions were in line with mine: having a passion for people and improving the lives of the community.”

Founded in 2002, Arizona-based Synergy HomeCare provides high-quality, non-medical home care to people in their homes. Caregivers are available on an hourly, daily, weekly or 24/7 basis, 365 days per year to seniors, the convalescing or disabled and anyone else who needs help with daily activities. Potential clients can call any time of the day or night to request a caregiver and Synergy HomeCare responds. In 2008, the company is expected to sell 45 new franchises, bringing the total number of locations across the country to 75. Synergy HomeCare expects to sell up to 300 U.S. franchises within the next five years - 14 more of which will be in Tennessee. Kyle hopes to contribute to this growth by opening a second office in Loudon County, West Knoxville or Oak Ridge, and further expanding his region over the next few years.
