Blount Memorial Hospital associate administrator Don Heinemann has been promoted to associate administrator and chief operating officer according to an announcement issued today by hospital administrator Joe Dawson.
In his announcement, Dawson talked about Blount Memorial’s accelerated growth in recent years and the need to expand executive leadership and management responsibilities.
In talking about the hospital’s growth, Dawson noted that the number of physicians and employees had nearly tripled in the past two decades, and that the hospital’s service and program offerings had more than doubled.
“In recent years, our hospital has become a more-complex organization in an increasingly complex industry, requiring more management expertise and attention at the executive level,” Dawson said. “As we continue this strong growth pattern, we want to ensure that we are equipped to fulfill our vision for the future and our mission of serving our patients and the community.”
A 23-year executive with Blount Memorial, Heinemann joined the organization as assistant administrator in April 1985 and was promoted to associate administrator in 1988. During this time, he has been responsible for key clinical and support services in the areas of cardiology, pharmacy, clinical and reference laboratories, diagnostic imaging, endoscopy, radiation oncology, vascular laboratory, respiratory care, rehabilitation services, neurophysiology, environmental services, laundry, facilities management, the Cancer Center and sleep medicine.
Additionally, Heinemann has overseen several facility master planning initiatives which resulted in the completion of more than $75 million in construction and renovation projects including the development of an on-campus Cancer Center, a freestanding joint- venture surgery center, a wellness facility, an assisted living and transitional care campus, medical office buildings and an outpatient diagnostic center.
New clinical services developed under Heinemann’s leadership have included a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratory, enhanced imaging technologies including PET/CT and MRI capabilities, regional immunology and endocrinology reference laboratories, a comprehensive Breast Health Center, an endoscopy laboratory, an all-new Cancer Center and a joint-venture Center for Sleep Medicine.
Citing Heinemann’s accomplishments, Dawson said, “Don’s leadership, management and oversight have contributed enormously to the significant growth Blount Memorial has achieved over the past two decades. He certainly has earned this opportunity for increased responsibility.”
Prior to joining Blount Memorial, Heinemann was an administrative resident at Roanoke Memorial Hospital (Carillion Health System) in Roanoke, Va. Before that, he served as an administrative intern and evening administrator in the same health system.
Heinemann holds a bachelor of science degree in business from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va., and a master of science degree in health care administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.
Heinemann is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, a member of the ACHE regional advisory committee, an affiliate of the American Hospital Association, an affiliate of the Tennessee Hospital Association and vice president of the Knoxville Area Hospital Council.
