The Maryville College Center for English Language Learning-- is looking for local families to host exchange students this summer. Three groups of high school students from China will be at the college for a two-week program from July 10 to July 25. Families who can host one or two students per family are being sought. Families must have adequate space and provide transportation daily to and from the college, arriving by 9 a.m. and departing by 5:30 p.m. Renumeration is available if requested. SMRC offers youth summer rowing camp -- this summer. The two camps are designed for boys and girls ages 13 and older who want to explore the sport of rowing. Experienced coaches and rowers from Smoky Mountain Rowers Club will lead the camp, which includes instruction on basic rowing terminology, physiology and technique. Students will receive on-the-water instruction and how to practice their rowing technique using an ergometer. The five-day camp is from 8 a.m. - noon July 14-18. The cost is $200 and includes a T-shirt, water bottle and daily snack. At the end of each week, campers compete in a mini regatta and enjoy a lunch with their parents. The Mary E. Tippitt Memorial Library in Townsend is holding its annual Summer Reading Program for children ages 3 to 11. The activities will take place from 1to 3 p.m. on Thursday, July 10, 17, 24 and 31. This year’s theme is “Starship Adventure @ Your Library.” David Fields from the Solar System Ambassador’s Program will be the guest on July 10. Bob Becker, weatherman from Channel 6, will be the guest on July 17.
A field trip to the Heritage Planetarium is scheduled for July 24. The picnic and awards presentation will take place on July 31 at Townsend City Park.

Kindermusik by Sarah Parrish-- is holding open enrollment for Summer Camps, Summer Fun Days and the Fall 2008 semester classes. Kindermusik is the world’s leading music and movement program for children from birth to 7 years old. It is based on the beliefs that every child is musical, every parent is the child’s most important teacher, the home is the most important place for learning to take place and grow, and that based on research, music nurtures a child’s cognitive, emotional, social, language and physical development. The Taoist Tai Chi Society beginner’s classes will be held on Tuesdays through August 26 from 6:30 -8 p.m. at FUMC, 804 Montvale Station Rd., Maryville. The slow martial art steps increase flexibility and strength and improves balance. It can be practiced by people of all ages and physical conditions. Each week of class will consist of a review of the previous steps, practice of those steps and the addition of several new steps. The Taoist Tai Chi set has 108 steps; however, there are a number of repeated sequences of steps.
