Age: 25

Engaged to Mike McQueen. They have a daughter, 16-month-old Ophelia “Ollie” McQueen.

Occupation: Ceramic artist and owner of Studio 212 at 212 E. Harper Ave., Maryville.

What was your first paying job?

“I taught jazz and tap classes to 5 and 6 year olds twice a week at the dance studio where I took classes.”

If you were stranded on an island, what one thing would you take?

“I would take my family. Mike is pretty handy, and I could not be away from Ollie.”

If you could do one impulsive thing, unrestricted by cost, what would it be?

“I would love to build a huge anagama tunnel wood kiln.”

What task or activity have you still not gotten around to doing?

“What have I gotten around to doing?”

What’s your favorite television or movie quote?

“A relationship, I think, is like a shark. You know? It has to constantly move forward, or it dies. And I think what we got on our hands is a dead shark.” Annie Hall.

What is one thing you have always wanted to do but haven’t?

“I want to travel and see the world.”

Do you think there is life on other planets?

“Yes. My mother has told me since I was a little girl that there is life on other planets. She is convinced that she will one day be abducted by aliens because she is interesting and special enough to be a great representation of the human species.”

What is your favorite material possession?

“Probably my overalls and my green crocs for studio work, which are currently missing.”

What are you reading currently?

“ ‘The Tipping Point,’ by Malcom Gladwell.”

Who has been the most influential person in the 20th century?

“My brother, Jason. He is currently in the Peace Corps in Nicaragua and is working on making the world a better place. He is a neat individual. He is an influential person to me, and, with age, he will become influential to others.”

What was your most embarrassing moment?

“I embarrass myself daily so uncomfortable moments or embarrassing situations do not really ruffle my feathers.”

Why did you pursue the career you chose?

“I love to work in clay. I think it is such a neat concept that one can take something as simple as mud and make it beautiful. You can take something from the earth and change the molecular structure of the substance so it can never be broken back down into the earth.”

What is one word others use to describe you?

“Witty, because I am quick like a cat.”

When you were 5 years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?

“I wanted to be a professional ballerina but then I discovered McDonalds.”

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

“I like myself.”

What is your passion?

“Clay is my passion. I really enjoy the process that goes into making a form, but my favorite thing is the process of firing the form. I enjoy tinkering with fire and the atmosphere of the kiln to produce unique objects. I am currently firing my work in a soda kiln, where baking soda is thrown into the kiln to glaze the work or alter a glaze.

With whom, living or dead, would you most like to have a long lunch?

“I would like to have lunch with Gail Nicols. She is a guru on soda firing.”

What do you hate?

“Close-toed shoes. I like to feel my toes wiggle.”

What’s your favorite quote?

“Bernard Shaw: ‘Use your health, even to the point of wearing it out. That is what it is for. Spend all you have before you die; do not outlive yourself.’”

What is your dream vacation?

“My dream vacation would be to travel freely around the world for a year or so. I would plan my arrival city and my departure city and just float and let the trip take on its own.”

Rebels, Tornadoes, Mountaineers or Governors?

“All of them. Go team go!”

What is your all-time favorite movie?

“Shrek 2, according to my daughter, Ollie.”

What is the best book you’ve ever read?

“ ‘The Prophet.’ My brother gave it to me.”

Would you travel in space?

“Yes.”

If you could go back in time for a week, what time period or year would you visit?

“I would go back to Victorian times just to shun the corsets and layers of clothing and hopefully start the bra burning earlier. What were they thinking?”

What character in a book or movie would you most like to be?

“Mary Poppins. She can clean a room by snapping her fingers, she can fly with just an umbrella, she can pull a floor lamp out of her purse, and she can jump into chalk drawings.”

What is your favorite sport and favorite sport’s team?

“I like hockey. My favorite teams are the Detroit Red Wings and the Fighting Sioux from North Dakota.”

What is the best present you ever received?

“My daughter, Ollie.”

What is the best advice your mother ever gave you?

“Be an individual and be proud of yourself. That is from both my mom and dad.”

Did you ever get paddled in school and if so, why?

“No, I missed the paddling years.”
