Maryville College Young Alumni gathered early in December to celebrate the holidays with one another at the Capitol Theater/Heath Claiborne Gallery in downtown Maryville.
Tim Self, a 2003 graduate of Maryville College, said anyone who graduated from the college in the last 15 years is considered a young alumni and is invited to their socials. “It’s just a program to involve young alumni in the life of the college,” he said. “It’s through the Office of Advancement.”
The alumni enjoyed a showing of “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”
“It was a Christmas wine and cheese social,” Self said. Self said some alumni drove from Kingsport and Athens to participate in the event. Often the socials are informative as supporters of the college can give updates on the capital campaign, the fundraising effort with the civic arts center and endowment increases, he said.
Self said he and Wendy Wheeler, associate director of admissions and a 2001 graduate, coordinated the December social. Self said the events also give recent graduates an opportunity to meet other graduates from previous years. “It’s a networking opportunity,” he said.
