The East Tennessee Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation welcomes Sarah Lawson as chair for the 2008 Blount County Arthritis Walk. Lawson has participated in the BCAW since its beginning in 2001. “For me, I love to do the walk because my dad cannot,” said Lawson whose father was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at the age of 24. “It’s something I can do for him,” she said. Her mother is a nurses who worked with patients with the disease.
Lawson has worked for Alcoa Tenn Federal Credit Union for 10 years. She attended Pellissippi State Community College to pursue a degree in information technology and she currently works in Alcoa Tenn’s information technology department maintaining the Web site and working on overall operations. A native of Blount County and graduate of William Blount High School, she also teaches Sunday school and works with the youth ministry at Green Meadow Church of God.
In 2007, Lawson’s team of 17 friends and co-workers at Alcoa Tenn Federal Credit Union raised over $4,000 for the Blount County Arthritis Walk. “At Alcoa Tenn, we are encouraged to give back to the community we serve. While employees voluntarily support our BCAW team, our members are also very generous to the cause and help us raise the money,” said Lawson.
The Arthritis Foundation Web site reports that all forms of arthritis collectively affect 46 million Americans. However, at the BCAW, participants can see how much the Arthritis Foundation impacts families with arthritis to help get treatment and manage their symptoms each day. “The Arthritis Walk is a very fun and exciting event, but it also introduces participants to the actual people the Arthritis Foundation helps,” said Lawson.
This year’s Blount County Arthritis Walk will be Saturday, May 3 at 10 a.m. The location will be announced later and details of the walk and activities will be online at www.blountcountyarthritiswalk.kintera.org.
