They are getting ready -- not only for the main event in June, but for the year 2010.
Organizers of Relay for Life, one of Blount County’s most successful events in both fund raising and community gathering, held their Team Leaders meeting recently at Maryville College. Team Leaders were given materials, questions were answered and a general “pumping up” of the leaders were the orders of the day.
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature event held across the country. In Blount, this will be the 11th year for Relay, which has grown from two teams raising $1,500 in 1997 to 128 teams bringing in $333,932 in 2007.
Rick Shepard, Blount County Relay for Life co-chair with his wife, Cindy, was at the meeting not only to encourage the captains to reach this year’s goal of $375,000, but to look to 2010, when the goal is $500,000.
Marion Westerling with the American Cancer Society said 84 teams had signed up for the Blount County Relay to date. The goal is 130 teams.
The all-night event will be at Maryville College again this year and will be held on Friday, June 6, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m.
