Red Hat ladies show off ‘jewels’ of the community

The Red Hat Jewels are making this a very special time for eight Blount County girls. The society is sponsoring a debutante ball and presenting eight young women in the community at the Red Hat Jewel Debutante Ball on Saturday, March 1, at the Airport Hilton.

Before that special night, a previously scheduled talent show will be held on Friday, Feb. 22, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center at 7 p.m. The show was rescheduled from earlier due to the death of Anthony Dunnings, executive director of the MLK, Jr. Center.

The eight young ladies who will be presented to society on March 1 are:

Natasha Carr is the daughter of Vanessa Carr and the granddaughter of Jack and Odessa Carr. She is a senior at Maryville High School and plans to go to East Tennessee State University or to the University of Tennessee Chattanooga to study physical therapy. She attends St. John Missionary Baptist Church. Her hobbies are dancing, hanging out with her friends and shopping. She is a member of the Black-tip Sharks, a competitive hip-hop team.

Victoria Cook is the daughter of Kathy Cook and Victor Yarbrough. She is the granddaughter of Annette Cook. Victoria is a senior at Maryville High School and plans to attend Pellissippi State with an interest in interior design. She attends Rest Haven Missionary Baptist Church where she is a member of the usher board. Victoria is employed at McAlister Deli.

Clarissa Monique McNear is the daughter of Doris Y. McNear and Robert Ande Smith, both of Alcoa, and the granddaughter of Cecelia W. Campbell of Rockwood and Gladys Ann Smith of Alcoa. She is a senior at Maryville High School and plans to attend Pellissippi State, followed by East Tennessee State University where she will pursue a degree in business administration and criminal justice. Clarissa attends Mt. Zion Church, where she is very involved in the inspirational choir, Zion’s Promise choir, Usher board and Just Our Youth programs.

Vanessa Mynatt is the daughter of Orlando Mynatt of Rockford and Renee Mynatt of Maryville and the granddaughter of Laura and James Taylor and Lucinda and Gary Williams of Rockford. She is a senior at Maryville High School where she is active in the MHS Step Team and track and field. She attends Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church where she is on Usher Board and active in the Zion Promise Choir. She also volunteers at Love Kitchen in Knoxville and is employed at McAlister’s Deli. She plans to attend the University of Tennessee Chattanooga and major in criminal justice.

Kim Prater is the daughter of Shane and Felicia Lenor. She is a senior at Heritage High School where she is a member of HOSA and FCCLA, and is a third-time president of the Early Childhood Education Career Class. Her awards include the 2007 Presidential Award and the 2007 Best Teacher Award. At the Tennessee Valley Boys and Girls Club, she was named the 2007 Youth of the Year. A member of St. John Baptist Church, she is on the Spiritual Movements Dance team there. Kim plans to attend Pellissippi State for two years before transferring to East Tennessee State University to major in criminal justice.

Erica Sankey is the daughter of Michelle Bilbrey and Don Sankey and the granddaughter of Queen Crossing, Mary Sankey and the late Sam Sankey. Erica is a senior at Alcoa High School and plans to attend Middle Tennessee State University in the fall and major in nursing. Her hobbies include reading and writing poetry.

Jeanisha Monique Walker is the daughter of Leondra Walker and Gene Curry. A senior at Alcoa High School, she attends High Praises Church. Jeanisha plans to attend college after graduation and become a registered nurse specializing in children’s and pediatric work.

Maurissa Watson is the daughter of Zandra Widener and Martin Watson and the granddaughter of Odell Warren and Thelma Watson. She is a senior at Alcoa High School where she is part of the yearbook staff. Maurissa plans to attend the University of Tennessee Chattanooga in the fall to study early childhood education with a minor in criminal justice. She is a member of the Bethel Baptist Missionary Church and enjoys writing, poetry and listening to music.
