Christmas trees lit up the night around the Blount County Courthouse Dec. 4 when the annual Festival of Trees kicked off.
Christmas trees sponsored and/or decorated by different organizations and businesses throughout Blount County were situated across the lawn. The event was sponsored by Maryville Alcoa Blount County Parks and Recreation and Blount Today.
County Mayor Jerry Cunningham also took time to honor the family and memory of the late U.S. Marine Sgt. Michael Ferschke, a 22-year-old Maryville High graduate who was killed in August during a fire fight in Iraq.
Cunningham said the event was a way for Blount County to honor Ferschke’s sacrifice for keeping Americans safe from terror.
“The least we can do is honor his family. It’s important to me as a Blount Countian, as mayor and as a Marine,” Cunningham said.
